Why We’re Obsessed With Pumpkin Spice
The pumpkin spice craze has commenced, and we recommend you run (not walk) to your nearest grocery store and stock up on pumpkin-spiced everything. And, by everything we mean cereal, donuts, coffee, candy, liquor, energy bars and the list goes on and on. But, if you’re not as passionate about the fall flavor as we are, well we just don’t need that kind of negativity in our lives. We will continue to shamelessly lose our minds when October rolls around, and Starbucks releases the first batch of PSL’s. Now, let’s get down to the root of the mania and find out why we are all so in love with pumpkin spice.
1. It signals the arrival of fall.
Pumpkin spice = a new season alas. Each year, the release of pumpkin-flavored products is intrinsically followed by colder weather, colorful leaves, football, and the arrival of the holiday season. So, in theory, pumpkin spice season is just a gateway to fun fall activities. Without a doubt, we are here for it all.
2. It’s here for a good time, not a long time.
The fact that pumpkin spice is only available for a limited time may be another reason why we’re so infatuated with it. For just a few short months, we get to indulge and then it’s gone until next year. Maybe absence really does make the heart grow fonder.
3. It makes us nostalgic.
For some, the familiar flavor of pumpkin spice brings back fond memories of our youth and past holidays. We reminisce about the trips to the pumpkin patch, sitting cozily by the fireplace, and baking pies with grandma. Who knew that one flavor could harbor so much happiness?
4. It’s all about the spices, not the actual pumpkin.
In actuality, pumpkin itself does not have a robust flavor at all. The flavors that create the pumpkin spice are typically a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. In addition to these tasty spices, the added sugar and salt in pumpkin-flavored foods tend to make our brains happy. And, maybe a little addicted too. #WorthIt.
